Who is the Ladies Auxiliary?

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of the United States, was founded in 1914 to help veterans and their families. It is an integral part of the VFW's volunteer efforts. Promoting patriotism and helping veterans in need are just two of the many ways that the Auxiliary serves their Posts and America's communities. Learn about the accomplishments of the Ladies Auxiliary across the nation last year.

Eligibility to the Ladies Auxiliary is opened to wives, widows, mothers, foster and stepmothers (who have performed the duties of parent), grandmothers, daughters, granddaughters, foster and stepdaughters (who attained that status prior to the age of sixteen and for whom the duties of parent were performed), sisters, half sisters, foster and stepsisters (who attained that status prior to age sixteen) of persons who were or are eligible for membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Message from our President

Lynn Jones

Lynn

The first thing I want to do is to thank all of you, my sisters and comrades, in our great organization. You have supported me tirelessly in my efforts to become your State President, and I am truly appreciative. And, of course, it would be remiss of me not to thank Bill Sloan, our incoming State Commander and my good friend. He has always been there when I needed him, and I know I can count on him for anything during the coming year.

My special project in 2009-2010 is the VFW’s National Military Services program. This consists of the Military Assistance Program (MAP), the Unmet Needs program, the Operation Uplink program, and the Adopt-A-Unit program. These vital programs are designed to help both military units and individuals during this time of war and worry. All of our efforts must be bent toward helping soldiers, veterans, and their families, as that is the core reason for our very existence as an organization. All else is a distraction, and must be avoided if we are to truly make a difference. The themes for this year are remarkably similar and make good, common sense. The National President’s theme is “It’s Time for America’s Military Heroes,” which compliments the National Commander-in-Chief’s theme, “Honoring Our Military Heroes.” Similarly, my theme of “Sailing to New Horizons” compliments our State Commander’s theme, “Together As One.” This is a stirring year of change for both the comrades and ladies in the Department of North Carolina. More than ever before, we are going to emphasize that the two organizations compliment each other, and by training together, recruiting together, and working together, we can accomplish great things for both.

Membership, of course, is of vital importance if we are to accomplish all that needs to be accomplished to help our brave soldiers, veterans, and their families. We need new, young members who are waiting to get involved and support their community. A new spirit of “familiness” needs to be practiced in our posts. Make the effort to get new, young women to come to your post with their children, and have something for the children to do while their mother is helping out. Having the youth of the Tarheel State becoming involved can only help our two organizations. That leads me to saying a few words about VFW and Ladies Auxiliary programs. The mandated programs of our organizations include the Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen, Citizenship Teacher of the Year, Junior Girls, Scouting, and Patriotic Art, among others. The basis for our involvement needs to be grounded in these programs. Only after we are thoroughly involved with these programs should we spend time on other, peripheral programs. REMEMBER why we exist as an organization!

Finally, take note that deadlines exist for a reason. We have a lot of hard workers in the Ladies Auxiliary, and if you miss a deadline on a report or another action, you simply make it that much harder for them to do a good job. Deadlines are to be met in a timely and efficient manner, and not meeting a deadline will result in you or your auxiliary not getting credit for the work you have done.

In conclusion, I look forward to a very successful and rewarding year for the Ladies Auxiliary of the Department of North Carolina! Let us go “Together As One” as we go “Sailing to New Horizons!”
