2008 Erline Mayberry Scholarship Winners

Spencer Hinson |
Spencer Henry Hinson, a senior at South Stanly High School in Norwood, has been awarded a $1000 Erline Mayberry Scholarship from the Ladies Auxiliary. Mr. Hinson qualified under the eligibility of his late grandfather Alfred G Hinson, who was a member of VFW Post 2908 in Albemarle.
Mr. Hinson is the younger son of Richard and Beth Hinson of Albemarle. Planning to pursue a degree in Music Education at Appalachian State University, he has been a member of the school’s marching band since the 8th grade. He was selected as Drum Major for the band for the current year, and was twice selected as a participant in the Western Carolina Honor Band. Among his many other accomplishments, Spencer is active in his church, serving as Youth Liaison to the Administrative Board. He has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow, the honor society of Boy Scouting, where he serves as the local Lodge’s chief of finance. Spencer was also the District 9 winner for the Auxiliary’s Patriotic Art contest in both 2007 and 2008.

Tara Arnold |
Tara Nicole Arnold, a senior at Swansboro High School in Swansboro, has been awarded a $1000 Erline Mayberry Scholarship from the Ladies Auxiliary. Ms. Arnold qualified under the eligibility of her mother Lynn Jones, a member in VFW Auxiliary 9960 in Swansboro.
Ms. Arnold is the only child of Gene and Lynn Jones of Swansboro. She plans to pursue a degree in Forensic Psychology with a minor in Music Composition at NC State University. Tara is a member of the National Honor Society, and active in tennis. She is a member of the Big Brother/Big Sister organization, Foreign Language Club, Math Club, Art Club and several of the school’s bands (Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band) playing trumpet, mellophone and French horn. Tara was Department Buddy Poppy Queen in 2001. She volunteers at the Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary and other organizations, and works part time at a local restaurant.

Crystal Kluttz |
Crystal Miranda Kluttz, a senior at South Rowan Senior High School in China Grove, has been awarded a $1000 Erline Mayberry Scholarship from the Ladies Auxiliary. Ms. Kluttz qualified under the eligibility of her grandmother, Barbara Webb, a member in VFW Auxiliary 3006 Salisbury.
Ms. Kluttz is the daughter of Eddie and Lori Kluttz of China Grove. She plans to pursue a degree in nursing, specializing in labor and delivery, and has already achieved the training to qualify as a Certified Nurse Assistant. Crystal is a member of the National Honor Society, and active in cheerleading and theatre and dance. She is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America, the Spanish Club, and has served as co-editor or her school’s yearbook staff. Crystal volunteers at Special Olympics, and at her church, and works part time as a babysitter and a tutor. Crystal is also active at the VFW, she has served as Buddy Poppy Queen for the Salisbury Post.
